fomapan 400 vs hp5

I have shot Foma 100 to get some lovely portraits and have used it for general purpose shooting outdoors on a bright sunny day with great results. HP5+ is the better film. But when its off, its pretty meh for me. I have gotten some nice shots out of it.

Is HP5 really $20 better than Fomapan? Required fields are marked *. I dont think I have as direct an analogy with Fomapan 400, its more of its own thing. Quite frankly, I deeply dislike BW films that are too sensitive to red. Are you metering correctly? I have enjoyed shooting Fomapan 100, but based in what I have read, I have never tried the 400 speed. The images more often than not remind of me Tri-X at box speed that prevailing grey-tone is distinct.

Anyway, I am bulkloading my 35mm rolls so at the end it can be very very cheap indeed, and this is something I enjoy when I go shooting or I want to experiment.

I think people looking for that aesthetic and willing to be less cavalier with their metering would be happy with the lower cost of Kentmere. This allows me to worry less about temperature, and I sort of just let things sort themselves out in the tank with as little agitation as necessary. However I really wanted to get better negatives. Every time I use it, I wonder why I dont use it more often. On screen, your frames look great. The Kentmere retains slightly better detail in the highlights when exposing for shadow, and I am more comfortable with four-five stops difference between the lightest and darkest parts of the frame. For starters it is a 200 ISO film not a 400 film. Ilford HP5 Plus Black and White Negative Film (35mm Roll Film, 36 Exposures) You Pay: $8.95. Let me know in the comments below if youve ever tried this film, and if so, whatd you think? Ya I actually think I got my best results by cranking the temp up on the DF96 to 90. Fp4 is a great film, little grain with punchy contrast and a good amount of sharpness. I realized in short order that I had to meet a certain quality level for every thing I was doing, and started referring to the rolling machine as the patented film scratcher. For example, I have shot Kentmere 400 pushed to 1600 or 3200 when photographing indoor sporting events. I have used the HP5+ a good bit and am satisfied with it, but I see that Fomapan is much cheaper. Seems to work best for me. It is a true 400 ISO film. Many of them think their way is the only way. I've used both and much prefer the look of HP5. Right out of the gate, I cant trust it. Because Fomapan is a classic, old-school type of emulsion, its performance in 135 format is what youd more or less expect when shot in the much smaller frame size of 35mm film, which in a word, a bit grainy. I've read on some forums that Kentmere (and thus CHM) is cut from the edges of HP5 and FP4 . Didn't do anything with it until recently.

The only downside compared to the Hp5 to me, is the fact that for instance you cant push it up to 3200ISO (or maybe is something to try?). Unless I pre-soak and rinse the film before the developer, I do so thoroughly after dumping-off the developer to ensure that none of the vivid green anti-halation dye remains to avoid polluting my stop both with it; with that level of rinse, the stop is probably redundant, but I do it anyway.

Fomapan 400 is a wonderful film in the right developer (I use Fomadon LQN and expose at 320 EI). So before people start saying that the developer is the problem and I should be using a proper developer, Cinestill Df96 is excellent and I have been very pleased with the results on other films (HP5 and Tri-X). Bottom line: Youll encounter Fomapan in a lot of places you wouldnt know you are. The Kentmere almost never dips into pure white, whereas the Fomapan does so very frequently. Fomapan features a more severe cut off, with well exposed images showing pure blacks and pure whites with only a very same-y grey in the middle. Like the Fomapan better in this sample, but obviously its a matter of tase. Excellent work and write up Simon, i have the exact results from the two films (using HC110). Ya fomapan 400 is such a strange film, but I really do love it for that. Great shots, Simon! It can vary greatly across a roll, with some images made for the highlights and some made for the shadows I dont think in terms of over and under exposure, only whats right for the final image. For your last two pictures I can only guess. The grain is blocky, but not distracting. Pan 400 is slightly more expensive vs. Kentmere but the price is still reasonable for a 400 speed film. I would seek professional help.

They show good detail and a reasonable tonal range, and good contrast after I boosted it in Photoshop. I dont think you are alone. Ive found Kentmere to be the most reliable of the cheap black and white stocks, though it can be a bit boring. Analog Workflow Forums (100% Analog/Traditional).

It is interesting that you can develop it in Spur HRX super fine grain developer at Box speed vs E.I. I love 400iso. It has more highlight bleed and halation than Kentmere, but this is rarely overwhelming in the way it may be on something like Cinestill 800t. It is a bit of a marmite film that gives some very different results depending on the use case. I bought up a bunch of Foma because of the low price, but ended up getting rid of most of it. In the end, I can afford Kodak and Ilford films and am starting to realize I should just quit looking for bargains. Again, it is actually a 100 film and not a 200, but I like it better but it is not close to being in the same league as Kodak films by any stretch of the imagination. Im reasonably pleased with these next four photos. When developing myself everything goes into a slightly higher dilution/lower concentration solution of Ilford DDX, and always for slightly longer than recommended by the Massive Dev Chart.
